Make Hash at Home: 5 Easy Methods You Can Try

Are you planning to make hash at home and you don’t know how to start? There are a variety of ways to make hash at home, and they are easy and simple. This article will discuss the top 5 methods of making hash.

What is Hash?

Before we begin, let us have a quick introduction to the hash.

Hash is the shortened word for “hashish,” from the Arabian language that means “grass.” Like a weed, a hash is a part of the cannabis plant. While weed is more prevalent in the West, a hash is more well-known in Africa and Asia.

Hash comes from the trichomes of a cannabis plant. Trichomes are the ripe, resinous gland heads that can be found at the cannabis plant’s surface, especially on the flowers. The appearance of the trichomes is like tiny, crystal-like particles. They possess the highest concentration of cannabinoids such as CBD and the “high” producing compounds, THC. Trichomes also possess terpenes which are responsible for the distinct aroma of the cannabis plant.

The Main Process of Making Hash

Although there are several ways in making hash in which the top 5 methods will be discussed in this article, the main process is the same. Hash is created by extracting the trichomes from the dried buds, leaves, and stems of the plant. The extracted trichomes form a fine powder, which is popularly known as kief. It is then pressed and heated to make cannabis concentration more potent.

Hash is usually formed into blocks that vary in color. The color of the hash dictates its quality. A golden-brown hash is of a higher quality. A slightly green hash is of lesser quality because it contains more plant matter.

Making Hash at Home

Now that you know some of the necessary information about hash and the main processes involved, you are now ready to make hash at home. Here are the 5 easiest and simplest methods on how to make hash at home.

Method 1: Hand-Rolling

Are you worried that you don’t have any equipment needed to make hash at home? Well, the hand-rolling method doesn’t require any equipment at all! It is the simplest way to make hash, which is also the most traditional method practiced in some parts of India and Nepal. The drawback of this method is that it is time-consuming. When you choose this method to make hash at home, be prepared for a hard day.

Materials:

  • Non-dried cannabis buds.
  • Very clean hands.

Procedure:

  1. First, make sure that your hands are very clean. Use a non-residual and non-scented hand soap to obtain the most organic results possible.
  2. Take a cannabis bud in your hand. Be sure to remove any leaves or stems.
  3. Gently roll the bud between your two palms. Take note not to apply too much pressure to the bud. This is to prevent contaminating your hash with plant particles.
  4. Eventually, a thick, black resin will be formed. This is essentially hash or charas. Place the hash onto a clean surface and press together to create small blocks.

Method 2: Dry Sifting

Dry sifting is one of the easiest and most popular methods of making hash. It only involves a few materials and a basic procedure, making it an ideal method to make hash at home.

Materials:

  • Cannabis trimmings. For best results, place the cannabis on a zip-locked bag and freeze it overnight. This will make the extraction of trichomes easier.
  • Silkscreen
  • Baking Paper
  • Credit card

Procedure:

  1. Place a sheet of baking paper on a clean surface. The sheet must be slightly larger than your silkscreen.
  2. Place the silkscreen on top of the baking paper.
  3. Place the cannabis trimmings on top of the silkscreen. Make sure to break apart any large pieces.
  4. Gently move the trimmings around the silkscreen with your hands. This will separate the trichomes from the plant material. A small amount of kief will form on the baking paper.
  5. Keep moving the trimmings until you obtain kief that is 10 to 20% of the total amount of trimmings used (if you use 100g of trimmings, you should look for about 10g of kief)
  6. After sifting, collect the kief by forming a nice pile on the sheet of baking paper. We recommend using a credit card for this one.
  7. Press the pile of kief to turn it into a thin hash block.

Method 3: Blending

If you have a blender and other simple household items at home, this method is another easy way to make hash at home.

Materials:

  • Cannabis trimmings
  • Ice water
  • Blender
  • Silkscreen
  • Coffee filter
  • Extra-large glass jar

Procedure:

  1. Place the cannabis trimmings in the blender. Add water that is enough to cover the trimmings. Also, add plenty of ice.
  2. Blend for about a minute or until you obtain a thick and foamy mixture.
  3. Place a silkscreen on top of a glass jar and pour in the mixture.
  4. Allow the mixture to settle for about half an hour. You will notice that a small number of sediments sank at the bottom of the jar. This is essentially hash.
  5. Remove about 2/3 of water. Take note to pour off the water slowly to avoid losing any hash at the bottom.
  6. Fill the jar to the top with ice water and settle the mixture for 3 minutes.
  7. Repeat pouring off water and adding more ice water. This will separate as much plant material from the hash as possible.
  8. Drain off the water as much as possible without losing any of the hash.
  9. Use a coffee filter to strain the remaining mixture. Squeeze it gently to remove excess water.
  10. The remaining cold, damp mass is hash. Dry it, and then you can enjoy it in a bong or joint.

Method 4: Using Bubble Bags

This is a new method of creating a hash and is extremely efficient. Unlike the other methods discussed so far, it involves the use of specialized equipment, but it can produce large yields. It is an excellent method you could try to make hash at home and have an ample supply of hash.

Materials:

  • Cannabis mesh bags (such as the Ice-O-Lator, it comes it different sizes of mesh)
  • Cannabis trimmings
  • Ice water
  • Wooden spoon
  • 2 buckets

Procedure:

  1. Place cannabis trimmings in a bucket filled with ice.
  2. Add water until the cannabis trimmings are fully submerged.
  3. Stir the mixture for about 15 minutes. The cold water will make the trichomes brittle while the slight tension will allow them to break off into the water.
  4. Set up the mesh bags in another bucket. The Ice-O-Later comes with 4 different sizes. Start by placing the bag with the finest mesh inside the bucket by curling the top of the bag over the bucket’s edge to secure it. Place the other remaining bags in ascending order after the finest mesh.
  5. Carefully pour the cannabis mixture into the bucket with the mesh bags.
  6. Allow the mixture to sit for about 15 minutes.
  7. Remove the first mesh bag. Hold it above the bucket and pour more ice water over the mixture. This will wash out any remaining trichomes.
  8. Slightly shake the bag, drain, and put aside.
  9. Repeat the process with the other bags. Take note that there will be varying hash quality on the bags. The last bag that will be removed, the finest bag, will produce the highest quality. The other bags will produce a slightly lower quality.
  10. Remove the hash from each bag and dry separately on a non-stick surface. Do not mix the different qualities of hash,
  11. When dried, press each pile into a ball or block.

Method 5: Using a Mechanical Drum

This is the most professional method for creating the hash. It is like the dry sifting method, but the entire process is automated.

This mechanical drum is one big silkscreen that spins when turned on. Like the dry sifting method, this separates the trichomes from the plant material. A drawback of this method is that this mechanical drum is expensive. It can cost over €350, so only a few choose this method to make hash at home.

Materials:

  • Cannabis trimmings. For best results, place the cannabis on a zip-locked bag and freeze it overnight. This will make the extraction of trichomes easier.
  • Pollinator (The mechanical drum)

Procedure:

  1. Place the trimmings inside the drum.
  2. Turn on the switch to make the drum spin. The cannabis then rubs against the silkscreen to create a highly potent kief.

When compared to the other methods, the use of a mechanical drum takes no effort at all. But the drawback is this method is expensive.

Like the dry sifting method, using a mechanical drum only produce kief, not a hash. As mentioned, the kief obtained from the dry sifting method is pressed using a credit card to form blocks. These blocks are essentially the hash. The pressure applied to the kief is what makes the hash.

There is also another way to make hash from kief. This involves the use of both force and heat. You can try this method if applying only pressure doesn’t work best for you.

  1. Wrap kief in cellophane.
  2. Wrap the sealed cellophane in a wet newspaper.
  3. Place it inside an oven preheated to 160°C for 10 minutes.
  4. Place the heated package on a heat proof surface and roll evenly with a rolling pin.
  5. Wet the entire package with warm tap water.
  6. Put the package back in the oven. Heat it for another 10 minutes. You can repeat the heating, rolling, and wetting process multiple times. This will result in a smoother and higher quality of hash.
  7. Chill the package in the fridge overnight to allow it to settle. Then your hash is good to go.

Conclusion

There are a variety of ways to make hash at home. Some may be simple with the use of certain equipment, while some may require hard work. Choose the method you think is best for you and enjoy smoking your very own hash.
